Lithium ion battery is a form of lithium battery in which lithium ions are made to move inside the battery in order to accomplish the task of producing current. If we look at a generalized structure of lithium ion battery then it consists of two electrodes namely cathode and anode. Lithium ions keep on moving between cathode and anode which results in the production of current. This current provides the required voltage and thus makes our appliances work. Apart from cathode and anode an electrolyte is also being used in lithium ion battery.
Electrolyte is present in liquid form which makes the movement of ions possible. Generally non aqueous solutions are used as electrolytes. Lithium ion battery is not very ancient and has come into existence few decades back. There are so many advantages of these lithium ion batteries which make them popular amongst users. Firstly they are available in different sizes and shapes.
Secondly they are light in weight. Being light in weight they can be carried easily anywhere. Thirdly the voltage levels that they provide are much better than alkaline batteries. Also they do not over discharge. They discharge very slowly which ensures that appliances working due to lithium ion battery do not get damaged. One problem with lithium ion battery is that of safety. They are explosive when not used properly. In order to avoid any such situation lithium ion battery should be sealed and used only as directed by the manufacturer.
